time we looked at this chapter I made the observation from verse 5
that we can actually give pleasure to the infinite Creator and Ruler
of all reality by trusting (having faith) in him. Verse 6 takes it a
step further and tells us that pleasing God is IMPOSSIBLE without
faith!

To
draw near to God in any meaningful way, we need to believe he exists,
naturally. But we also need to believe that he rewards those who seek
him. Through much of this book the author has associated reward with the obedience of believers, and this seems to be repeated here. We can have eternal life and still not please God. Instead, we give him pleasure by moment-to-moment trust in him and belief that he will reward us for "seeking" him.

The
Greek word for “seek” used here includes the ideas of : searching
for, investigating, scrutinizing, begging and craving. Notice that
there is both an intellectual AND an emotional aspect to this
“seeking”. It's easy (maybe especially for geeks) to emphasize
the emotional OR the intellectual in our relationship with God, but
he desires both. God takes pleasure AND rewards us for our questions,
our desperate pleas, our desires for him as a person and even our scrutinizing of him!

Faith
is, most of the time, not an intellectual struggle, but a struggle of
the will. We may have some legitimate intellectual questions and
issues to resolve, but on average our doubts are about an
unwillingness to believe, not an inability to believe. We may label our
doubts as intellectual and cite a lack of proof, as many unbelievers
do. But we tend to look for (and even manufacture) reasons to doubt so that we can keep from moving in the direction God wants us to go.
The Israelites of the exodus did this constantly despite the
numerous, “in their face” miracles of God they witnessed, and we
do the same thing when we selectively doubt in order to avoid God's shaping of
our lives and activities. When it comes to sexuality, forgiveness, our flaws, or the reliability of scripture itself, we can selectively dress up our selfish interpretations of data with references to scholars and experts. Or try to force a Greek or Hebrew word to mean something more or less specific than it really does. All because we don't WANT to believe that something is true.

Noah had plenty of motive to disbelieve God. We
don't really know exactly how Noah heard the commands of God. But he
undoubtedly faced a mental comparison between what God commanded and
how the rest of the world was living. Even if the words of God were
communicated with thundering clarity to Noah, he was surrounded by
people who chose pleasure over obedience. So in order to be faithful,
Noah had to trust that God's way, despite it involving prolonged,
difficult work, was the best way. Despite not seeing a drop of rain,
Noah trusted that what God was telling him to do was worth it.

That faith in Yahweh
included faith in The Son, despite Noah possibly being unaware of
God's triune existence. But even so, his faith was placed in God The
Son, and he became an heir of the righteousness Jesus would place on
the records of all who trust in him.

Noah's
faith also produced a public witness and reminder to those around
him, that God exists and is calling people to a different life than
they naturally choose for themselves. In this way they were
“condemned” by his faithful obedience.

So how could others have been "condemned" through Noah's obedience?

Have
you ever met a Christian who, in some form, is living or making choices in a better way than you are,
and your first mental reaction is to label them as “legalistic”
or “out of touch with the world”? Those evaluations of them may be true
in a given case. But I've seen in myself a tendency to have this
reaction out of defensiveness.

While
believers have no need to fear condemnation from God (Romans 8:1) my
defensiveness springs from the Holy Spirit's condemnation of my
actions and choices when compared to something that stands a little
closer to the ideal God has for me. And that realization knocks me
off my prideful podium and causes me to pursue God more deeply and
with greater trust. Our faith, without saying a word, can do the same
thing for those around us, whether believers or unbelievers.

I
think Geeks may especially face “the choice of Noah” every day.
Part of the way we define ourselves is based on our immense and
unusual enjoyment of entertainment. On the whole, we are pretty used
to giving in to our desires for pleasure. And pleasure in itself is
not bad. It's restful, restorative and fuels our creativity. But
prioritizing pleasure can be harmful to finances God would have us
use more effectively. And harmful to relationships with him and with others that
he wants us to engage in, in addition to other sin that entertainment
can potentially encourage.

It's worth asking, before we sit down to binge-watch that show or
immerse ourselves in Fallout, what purpose this time serves. Rest and
restoration are legitimate purposes. But do we also go to
entertainment as a default, when it isn't truly beneficial? I
certainly do.

And
yet if we take a moment before firing up that game or movie, before
pulling out that comic or novel, we may find an opportunity to trust
that God's way is better and invest in something with eternal value
and reward.

v. 5

We know very little about Enoch. In the Bible he is mentioned only briefly in the Bible and usually as no more than a detail of genealogy or geography. In Jude 1:14 he is called “the seventh from Adam”, likely only because his name appears 7th in order in two Old Testament genealogies beginning with Adam. (Genesis 5, 1 Chronicles 1)

Jude, in talking about people who have entered the Christian community and warped the truth, said:

It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones, to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” (Jude 1:14-15)

Jude is actually quoting “The Book Of Enoch” here. This non-canonical book has never been considered scripture by mainstream Judaism or Christianity. It's not a book that Jesus would have considered scripture. But authors of scripture occasionally quote non-scripture that contains an element of truth, which apparently this portion of the Book Of Enoch does.

So from this we can see that Enoch's faith involved an absolute sureness regarding the justice of God and his unstoppable plan to make right all the wrongs of the world, dealing with ALL sin, once and for all, and silencing all the voices that pridefully speak against God.

I really enjoy digging into the themes, virtues and philosophies being presented in geek entertainment. Creative types in all mediums, myself included, often inject their worldviews, intentionally or not, in the entertainment they create. Some of these themes are so thought-provoking to audiences that the creators themselves, and popular commentators, are given a platform to voice their opinion and teach or inform others regarding their beliefs and values. Entertainment is a useful and powerful tool!

However I go back and forth between being saddened and angered as I see these voices of geek entertainment neglecting or even boldly rejecting Jesus. I think about those who already reject Jesus and the encouragement this give them to continue in that. I think about those on the fence or close to it who are swayed further from the truth by these voices that are well-read with strong vocabularies who, despite these attributes, have chosen to selectively ignore truth.

I feel the urge to fire off a long-winded Youtube comment, dismantling their weak arguments and foolish assumptions. And maybe there's a place for that sometimes. But not without first remembering to have faith like Enoch, who knew that he didn't have to fix the world. Yahweh has a day for that. He's going to take care of that.

So my plans to rip apart the worldview of a popular Youtube voice in the comments change to a simple book recommendation and a “thank you” for the content they produced. Because God has a day set aside. And my defensive, anger-fueled attempts to save the world one person at a time on Youtube are more likely to muck things up than do any good.

We also see from Genesis 5:22 and 24 that Enoch “walked with God”. The Hebrew word for “walk” in these verses is often used to describe a manner of life. It was Enoch's way of life to just do things “with God”. He probably didn't compartmentalize his activities as “religious” and “non-religious” or “spiritual” and “non-spiritual”. He did life “with God” by default.

And apparently because of his faith or “by faith”, Enoch did not experience death, but was simply “taken” by God. (Hebrew manuscripts of Genesis do not necessarily imply this, but the Septuagint, the Greek translation quoted by Jesus and New Testament authors, more specifically suggests this, which the author of Hebrews confirms.) What an amazing reward for this man's unshakable trust in Yahweh!

If God has a “love-language”, it's trust. God loves us no less if we don't trust him. But consider for a second that we can give pleasure to the infinite God of all reality by trusting in him! He feels pleasure when we trust that he really is good and really will provide rescue from this world. Or when we trust his love for us enough to not become defensively angry when we feel attacked. Or when we trust that involving him in the details of our lives will ultimately bring more fulfillment and not less.Paeter Frandsenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16231354853345914221noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1212802760808231880.post-2839501224039043302015-07-04T13:30:00.000-07:002015-07-04T13:30:01.096-07:00Terminator: Genisys Review (SBU Podcast)

In the first 10 chapters of the book of Hebrews, the author has been establishing the superiority of Jesus and his sacrifice on our behalf to justly pay for all of our sins so that we can be reconciled with a perfect, and uncompromisingly holy God. Beginning in verse 22 of chapter 10, the author now describes how we ought to see the world and live our lives in light of what Jesus has done for us. In verses 23-25 he says that we should hold firmly to our faith and express it to others, encouraging each other as we commit to living in community with other believers, and as we look forward in anticipation to “the Day”, an expression which refers to the future judgment of Yahweh, in which evil is punished and wrongs are made right. (See Obadiah 1:15-17, where “The Day” Of Yahweh involves justice, and setting wrong things right.)

v. 26

The author warns of an alternative path to holding firm to our trust in Jesus. It's a path that leads to “sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth”. The Greek word translated “deliberately” here means “voluntarily, willfully, of one's own accord. To sin willfully as opposed to sins committed inconsiderately, and from ignorance or from weakness.” (Thayer's Lexicon)

This seems to paint a picture, not of someone who simply gives in to temptation but who sins in purposeful rebellion, as an intentional act of defiance toward God. For this kind of person, there “no longer remains a sacrifice for sins”.

Some would argue that this means that Jesus' sacrifice is no longer applied to these believers and therefore they lose their gift of eternal life. But the language is not near so specific here, and we see elsewhere in scripture that eternal life is a permanent, irrevocable gift. (John 5:24, Romans 6:23, Romans 11:29, 2 Timothy 2:13)

v.27

Still, for believers who become hardened and defiant toward God there is a “fearful expectation of judgment” and a “fury of fire that will consume the adversaries”. As believers, although we are forever free from God's condemnation, we are still under his judgment.

2 Corinthians 5:10- For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

The author of Hebrews also talks about the loss of reward for believers in this situation. He describes the fruit of their lives being a waste that is burned up rather than rewarded with blessing. (Hebrews 6:7-8) A similar idea is taught in 1 Corinthians 3:10-15, also using the imagery of fire.

So whether or not the author is grouping these defiant believers with the “adversaries” of God, the same intense evaluation will be focused on them, and they will suffer consequences just as surely as God's enemies will. But what will those consequences be?

v.28

The author doesn't spell out the consequences for believers who willingly become antagonistic toward God. But he points out that setting aside the Law God gave to Moses was worthy of the death penalty(Deuteronomy17, 18:20, 35:30 to name a few examples). This punishment was not eternal condemnation, but a shortened physical life.

v.29

Rebelling believers under the New Covenant of Christ suffer more intense consequences. So what would be worse than a shortened physical life right now? One possibility is the loss of some future eternal rewards. This seems a logical conclusion given the author's recurring references to obedience coming with reward. (Hebrews 6:7-8, 6:10-12, 10:35) A lack of obedience results in a lack of reward. And a rebelling believer who is ultimately unrepentant may even lose all potential rewards, despite keeping the gift of eternal life. (See 1 Corinthians 3:10-15)

If we feel a little uncomfortable at this point, and find ourselves asking “could this be describing me”, I think that's a good place to be now and then. It's important to frequently take a hard look at ourselves. But we shouldn't misunderstand these “warning passages” in a way that makes us paranoid. The author clarifies, both here and in Hebrews 6:4-8, what kind of person these warnings refer to. Someone who:

1. Was a genuine believer at some point (6:4-5)

2. Has stopped turning away from sins. (6:6)

3. Feels contempt toward Jesus (6:6)

4. Is not partnering with God to produce worthwhile fruit (6:8)

5. Bitterly neglects having anything to do with Jesus. (10:29, “spurned the Son of God”)

6. Considers the blood of Jesus to be either unclean, evil or insignificant (10:29 “profaned the blood of the covenant”)

7. Insulted the Holy Spirit (10:29 “outraged the Spirit Of Grace”)

This is a description, not of a believer who is in a season of doubt or failing moral behavior, but someone who, for whatever reason, has become hardened and hateful toward Yahweh. This person may not even think of themselves as a believer anymore, and may take up an entirely different worldview to live by.

Despite their irrational kicking and screaming, they are still rescued because of that moment in the past where they chose to trust Jesus to rescue and save them from the penalty of their sins. But they have entered a state that, if not turned away from, results in a tragic loss of reward.

v.30-31

Given the vagueness of scripture on the nature of these rewards, it may not seem like a big deal to lose them. But as the author points out here, the consequences of loss are a sure thing, based in the promises of God to fairly, and justly judge his people. It's a fearful state to be in, because while not clearly defined, it's a fate worse than death.

v. 32-34

Because of these severe potential consequences, the author pleads with his original audience, who were probably experiencing suffering that was tempting them to turn away from Yahweh. He urges them to remember the dedication of their faith early on and the perspective they had while experiencing suffering then. They dealt with public contempt and affliction, or struggled with being associated with those who were hated. They watched their possessions become stolen but held on to their confidence in a better possession in the future.

v.35-36

The author urges them, and us, to renew this kind of confidence in what God has for us, because this kind of confidence results in reward as we make the choice to endure!

v.37-38

The author paraphrases the Septuagint translation of Habakkuk 2:3-4. His point being that the return of Jesus will come very soon. As so many have observed, time flies by and our lives are over in what seems like a blink. Jesus is also on schedule and won't delay. So in the meantime we should live “righteously” (according to God's standards), which is done by trusting, and placing our hope in, Yahweh.

If we “shrink back” from that kind of life, we will proportionately miss out on the “pleasure”(in this context, “rewards”) of Yahweh.

v.39

The author speaks confidently of his readers, insisting that we who are reading this (whom he might conclude are therefore desiring to trust in Yahweh) are not among those who shrink back and experience loss or ruin (the meaning of the Greek word translated “destroyed” here), but are rather those who trust in Yahweh and preserve their “souls”.

The Greek word for “souls” here refers to “the vital force which animates the body”. It's not that we need to maintain our faith in order to preserve our eternal life with God. Rather, by continuing to place our faith in Yahweh we avoid loss of future eternal reward and a state of ruin and self-destruction in this life.

As Geeks, we often define ourselves by our obsession with and dedication to particular forms of entertainment. And because of this it's easy to see pleasure as a goal in life. In America we're even entitled to “the pursuit of happiness”, whatever that means. So we can look at our lives and see a lack of pleasure (or the presence of discomfort and suffering) as something that shouldn't happen, that we should flee from at all cost. We think of God as failing us when life goes “wrong” in our estimation of things.

I'm addicted to comfort and when things don't go as I planned I can really have it out with God. And a quick scan of the Psalms tells us there's room for that kind of wrestling and questioning in our relationship with God. But I don't ever want to stay in that place and become cold and bitter toward God.

In my personal life I've seen the self-destruction that takes place in believers who shut themselves off from other believers, and who become antagonistic toward God. That's a place I don't ever want to find myself.

Jesus didn't promise an easy life, he promised a troubled one. But he faced the worst that life had and overcame it. He also promised to be with us and promised reward for those who choose to grow in trusting him.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1212802760808231880.post-19095972274066499892015-05-22T15:51:00.001-07:002015-05-22T15:51:46.846-07:00Tomorrowland Review and Why Some Need A Summer Of Free (SBU Podcast)

Hebrews 10:19-23

Up until this point in the book of Hebrews, the author has been explaining and then emphasizing the absolute sufficiency of Jesus' sacrifice to pay the penalty for our sins once and for all, contrasting his work on our behalf with the Old Covenant's ultimately ineffective sacrificial system.

He sums it up in verses 19-21, from which I think we can conclude:

1. We have every reason to enter the “holy places” with confidence, not with dread or hesitation. You might remember that this refers to the TRUE holy places where God dwells in his full glory. (Hebrews 8:1-2) We are not “good enough” to have a relationship with an uncompromisingly holy God. He would be less than perfect if he just shrugged and threw up his hands at our sin. But God has made it possible for us to be with him without shame or fear of condemnation.

2. This is made possible by the infinite worth of the payment Jesus offered: his own body and life-blood, which endured the punishment we were due. This payment made the inner temple curtain obsolete. This curtain was used under the Old Covenant to separate everyone from the revealed presence of God. (Only the High Priest could go beyond the curtain and even then just once a year to offer a sacrifice.) At the climax of Jesus' suffering on the cross, this curtain was torn in half. (Luke 23:44-46) The new “curtain” that was brutally “opened up” to give us access to God, is the flesh of Jesus. Through his sacrifice, our guilt no longer prevents us from being in relationship with God.

3. Jesus is the ultimate bridge between us and God. The Old Covenant function of priests was to mediate the relationship between people and Yahweh. Jesus is the ideal and ultimate priest over all “household affairs of God” (See the “In Search Of Truth” notes on Hebrews 3:6). He is both over us and beside us. He takes away sterilized formality and brings intimate familiarity to our relationship with God.

These are realities that can change and revitalize the way we think about and approach every area of life. In light of these truths, the author begins describing how we can and should approach everyday life.

v.22

We should constantly be moving deeper into relationship with God, sincerely involving our entire inner being. If the author hasn't been clear enough, superficial ritual does not interest God or bring us closer to him. A true worship-relationship with God is one that learns and reflects on truth and responds and invests emotionally. (John 4:23-24) The religious leaders of Jesus day were in some ways like modern geeks. They were really into the Tanakh (Old Testament). They analyzed it and debated over it. They obsessed about complex intellectual concepts. And these are actually good things! But they kept their faith a matter of the mind, and never let the truth penetrate their hearts. They kept themselves at a cold, intellectual distance from God, when their study should have led them deeper into an authentic, emotional investment in God.

The second half of verse 22 likely refers to the spiritual cleansing we receive from Jesus and the physical washing (baptism) that symbolizes it. We should trust, and then experience inwardly, that we have been made clean. The evil that once defined us has been washed away(despite the fact that a frustrating, superficial remnant remains. Romans 7:18,25). Despite the broken way that the world looks at things, we are not defined by our appearance, our character flaws or our weaknesses. Believers in Jesus have those elements wiped from their definition.

v.23

We should hold on securely to a habit of openly expressing (“confessing”) the hope we have because of Jesus. We should remind ourselves and each other that we are being perfected by God and will be made perfect one day. We are constantly being invited, through our mundane, everyday lives, to be used by God for his epic and cosmic “household affairs”. We have no reason to be ashamed in the presence of a holy and perfect God. The pain, frustration and suffering in this life will be over before we know it, and we can look forward to a thrilling and fulfilling eternal future with Yahweh-God, who amazingly calls us his kids, and his friends!

Geeks really enjoy fixating on and obsessing over things. But we often fixate and obsess over things that really aren't that helpful (“which is better, DC or Marvel”) and might even be harmful (reliving or dreading difficult social/relational situations). Despite the pointless topics or negative thoughts we so easily prefer to dwell on, there is so much hope worth remembering and obsessing over! And the promises our hope is attached to are made by the same God who has proven repeatedly throughout history that when he says something... it's going to happen!
